What Is CBT for ADHD—and Why Does It Work?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for ADHD is a technique-driven, skill-building approach that helps adult ADHD sufferers manage the executive function problems they deal with daily—such as planning, prioritizing, organizing, time management, and follow-through on obligations and tasks.
As much as medication may help with focus and impulsivity issues, it does not teach you how to regulate or manage your schedule, how to break down large tasks, or how to stop procrastinating. Those are all skills that need to be learned, and they can be learned through CBT skills training.
CBT for ADHD helps you:
- What are the things you keep telling yourself over and over that are keeping you stuck? Are you saying things like "I'll never get this done" or "I work better under pressure"? See if you can catch them and notice the impact they're having.
- Build systems that work with your brain instead of fighting it
- Develop concrete strategies for time management, task initiation, and follow-through
- Practice new skills in a group setting where you can learn from others who "get it."
Research consistently shows that adults with ADHD who combine medication with CBT skills training have better outcomes than those who rely on medication alone. The skills you learn in this group don't just help during the 8 weeks you're enrolled—they're tools you can use for the rest of your life.

What You'll Learn in the "Wired Differently" ADHD Skills Group

This is not therapy where you spend an hour talking about your childhood and feelings. This is a skills training group. We will focus on teaching you skills and techniques that you can practice and apply in your real life.

Week by week, you'll build skills in:

Understanding Your ADHD Brain
The ADHD Version: What is ADHD? What are the main symptoms? What makes ADHD hard to manage? How does ADHD affect my everyday life?
Time Management That Actually Works
Different techniques for estimating how long tasks will take, using timers in work and life, and how to divide large projects into smaller tasks.
Organization Systems You'll Actually Use
How to create systems that match the way your brain works—not the way "normal" people organize.
Overcoming Procrastination and Task Initiation
Why you put things off (even when you care about them) and how to get started when your brain is screaming "not now."
Managing Distractions and Staying on Track
Techniques to reduce distractions, focus on a single task, and regain focus when you're pulled off track.
Planning, Prioritizing, and Follow-Through
How to decide what actually matters, stop getting sidetracked by less important tasks, and follow through on commitments.
Emotional Regulation and Frustration Tolerance
How to manage the emotional reactivity and frustration that often comes with ADHD—especially when things don't go as planned.
Building Sustainable Habits
How to make the strategies you've learned stick after the group ends.

Why Group Therapy Works for ADHD

Many adults with ADHD have lived with their symptoms for so long that they assume they are the only ones who experience them this severely. By participating in a Group Therapy program, the intensity of their experiences is validated and they no longer feel unique in their struggles..
Being in a room with other adults who understand what it's like to:
- Start 10 projects and finish none of them
- Lose your keys, wallet, or phone multiple times per week
- Forget important appointments or deadlines despite meaning to remember
- We all experience extremes of capability and incompetence in our daily lives - Feeling completely able to cope in some aspects of our lives, whilst feeling hopelessly unable in others.
This really resonates. I’m not weird, crazy, lazy, or a failure. I just need to learn to work with a brain wired completely differently from the average person's.

Group therapy also provides:

Accountability: It can be tough to really take on a new habit if you know you'll be reporting your progress to the entire class each day. Collaboration - 3 ways to benefit from Peer learning: - Working together allows the class to find more solutions than if students worked alone - Other’s ideas can help you - Peer learning helps you get over feeling that your idea is silly because then you have other ideas to think about for your own problem, and vice versa!
Real-time practice: You can try out strategies in the group and work out what isn’t working
Reduced isolation: Many adults with ADHD feel isolated by their struggles. Group therapy reminds you that you're not the only one

Who Should Join This Group?

This group is designed for adults (18+) who:
- Have been diagnosed with ADHD or strongly suspect they have it
- Are struggling with organization, time management, procrastination, or follow-through
- Want practical skills—not just a place to vent about their struggles
- We are willing to commit to practicing between sessions and reporting back to us on the effectiveness of a particular technique.
- Must be willing to commit to all 8 classes in a row because consistent practice is the best way to learn the material.

This group is NOT a substitute for:

- Individual therapy for trauma, relationship issues, or other mental health concerns
- ADHD evaluation or diagnosis (if you haven't been formally diagnosed, we recommend scheduling an evaluation first)
- Medication management (though you can be in the group while also working with a psychiatrist)
- If you're currently working with one of our psychiatry providers for ADHD medication management, this group is an excellent complement to that treatment. Many patients find that the combination of medication (to help with focus and impulsivity) and CBT skills training (to build systems and strategies) gives them the best results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need a formal ADHD diagnosis to join?
Preferred but not required: Formal Diagnosis. Since we can still help you whether you have a formal diagnosis or not, whether you are currently under assessment to confirm the diagnosis or have a strong feeling based on your symptoms that you indeed have ADHD, here’s what you need to know. If you have not already gone through an evaluation, we recommend scheduling an ADHD evaluation at A Ray of Hope.
Q: What if I miss a session?
Consistency is key to developing the new skills; therefore, it is strongly recommended that all 8 classes be attended. In the event of unforeseen illness or circumstance, if a class is missed, the participant is invited to communicate with the group leader about how they can catch up on any material they may have missed.
Q: Is this covered by insurance?
This is a self-pay group ($20 per session). This group will not be billed to insurance, which helps keep the cost to participants very low and does not require any insurance authorization.
Q: What if I'm already in individual therapy?
Many members already attend individual therapy to work on issues related to anxiety, depression, marital relations, etc. Attending the skills group focuses on the symptoms associated with ADHD.
Q: Can I join if I'm not currently on ADHD medication?
Yes. This group is beneficial whether you're on medication, not on medication, or considering starting medication. The skills you'll learn work regardless of medication status.
